How to Prepare for Your First FFL Transfer: A Beginner's Guide

Buying a Firearm Online

The internet has revolutionized how we shop, and purchasing firearms is no exception. Buying a gun online gives you access to a massive inventory and competitive pricing. However, due to federal law, firearms cannot be shipped directly to your front door. They must be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL).

If you’ve never gone through the FFL transfer process, it can seem intimidating. Here is everything you need to know about how to buy a gun online and transfer it legally.

Step 1: Purchase the Firearm Online

Find the firearm you want from an online retailer or auction site. During checkout, you will be prompted to select an FFL dealer to receive the shipment. If you are local to southern Indiana, you can select Standard Issue Armory as your receiving FFL.

Step 2: Forward Your Order Details

Once your purchase is complete, it is highly recommended to email your chosen FFL with your order details and tracking number. This allows us to expect the package and securely log it into our system the moment it arrives.

Step 3: Wait for the Call (Not Just Delivery Confirmation)

This is the most common mistake first-time buyers make! Even if FedEx or UPS says your package was "Delivered," do not immediately show up at the gun shop.

Federal law requires FFLs to accurately log every received firearm into their Acquisition and Disposition (A&D) bound book before they can transfer it to a customer. This process takes time. Wait until the FFL explicitly calls or emails you to say your firearm is ready for pickup.

Step 4: The Firearm Background Check

When you arrive to pick up your firearm, you will need to bring:

  • A valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID (like a Driver's License) with your current physical address.
  • Any state-required permits (if applicable).

You will then fill out ATF Form 4473, and the dealer will run a firearm background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Assuming you receive a "Proceed" status, you pay the nominal transfer fee, and the firearm is yours!

By understanding these steps, you can ensure your online purchase is completely stress-free. Standard Issue Armory proudly offers fast, secure, and affordable transfer services for our local community.
