Upgrading Your AR-15: Top 5 Modifications for Accuracy and Reliability

Optimizing the AR-15 Platform

The AR-15 is the most modular rifle platform on the planet. Whether you bought a complete rifle off the shelf or built one from scratch, there is always room for optimization. However, with thousands of aftermarket parts available, it can be overwhelming to decide where to spend your money.

At Standard Issue Armory, we specialize in custom gunsmithing and tactical solutions. Based on our experience building precision rifles, here are the top five upgrades to maximize the accuracy and reliability of your AR-15.

1. A Match-Grade Trigger

If you want to immediately improve your accuracy, start with the trigger. The heavy, gritty "mil-spec" triggers found in most entry-level rifles make it difficult to achieve a clean break without disturbing your sight picture.

The Solution: Upgrade to a high-quality drop-in or component trigger. A crisp, 3.5 to 4.5-pound trigger pull allows for much faster and more accurate follow-up shots. This is the single most effective upgrade for instantly shrinking your shot groups.

2. The Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)

The BCG is the beating heart of your rifle. If it fails, your rifle is nothing more than an expensive club.

The Solution: Invest in a premium BCG with a durable coating like Nickel Boron (NiB), Titanium Nitride (TiN), or Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC). These coatings drastically reduce friction, make firearms maintenance significantly easier, and ensure reliable cycling even under heavy fouling.

3. A Free-Float Handguard

Traditional drop-in handguards attach to the barrel nut and a front sight block, meaning any pressure you put on the handguard (from a bipod, a barricade, or a tight sling) transfers directly to the barrel, altering barrel harmonics and shifting your point of impact.

The Solution: A free-float handguard only attaches at the receiver, meaning the barrel is completely untouched. This consistency dramatically improves the mechanical accuracy of the rifle.

4. An Adjustable Gas Block

Many factory rifles are intentionally "over-gassed" to ensure they cycle low-pressure ammunition. However, this excess gas causes harsher recoil, faster parts wear, and excessive carbon buildup.

The Solution: Installing an adjustable gas block allows you to precisely tune the amount of gas returning to the action. By restricting the gas to the exact minimum needed for reliable cycling, you'll experience a softer-shooting, cleaner, and vastly more reliable rifle. If you aren't comfortable drilling and pinning a gas block, the team at Standard Issue Armory can handle this installation.

5. Quality Optics and Mounts

You can't hit what you can't see. Relying on cheap optics or sub-standard mounts on a high-end rifle will lead to constant frustration and wandering zeroes.

The Solution: Whether you prefer a Red Dot Sight (RDS) for fast, close-quarters work or a Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO) for versatility, invest in quality glass. Just as importantly, ensure you use a rigid, high-quality mount.
